So as my paychecks have gone up over the years my wardrobe has expanded. The style has always been present, whether Im wearing some sweats, an american apparel v neck, huaraches, and a yankee fitted on or if Im rocking my ROTM double monks, APC new standards,and a Bastian button up. Its always there. Just a matter of it coming to the forefront on a daily basis. I think a huge mistake is knowing time and place. Some stuff should just not be worn to certain places or events. This is not to say that knowing what is cool and stylish isn't important. If you still rock boot cut jeans there may be no hope for you. But the purpose of this post was to discuss one of my biggest pet peevs. If you have money, there is no excuse for you to dress bad. Plain and Simple. First and foremost, dress your age. If you are still wearing clunky skater shoes and your not 15, thats an issue. Tee shirts with designs and rhinestones on them, gotta go. The list can go on and on, but you get the point. Second, dress for the occasion. If you are an adult male and are leaving the house, it doesnt always have to be super casual. typically it shouldnt. Drop the tennis shoes and step it up. Trust me. The ladies will love you for it. So look at some of these pics and think in your head it could be you. And that 5'10 italian model on these guys respective hips may be yours too. So I must admit that I have been slacking on my luggage game for years, except for the couple times I took my pops vintage leather duffle so as travel season for me approaches I have decided to invest in a couple of pieces. The movie is great and comes across like a David Cronenberg film with its intensity, so if you are expecting Fast and Furious go elsewhere. Gosling gives a virtuoso performance as you've probably come to expect if you've seen any of his last ten films, and the script is simple but on point. So a running dialogue with some of my friends is the question as to if one can still wear sneakers, and more specifically, Jordans past a certain age. Some background on me and my shoes has to be included. I have always had a large collection of shoes, from a young age to present day, and when I had the means to cop my own sneakers, I ran with it. But when I graduated college I essentially graduated my shoe game. I stopped wearing Jordans and my tennis consisted of some purcells or authentics. Air maxes, dunks, and jordans were replaced by desert boots, laceups, and boots. But some of my boys held on longer than me, and although I didnt support it, I can respect it, TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. Kanye and Kudi have the recipe on how to wear sneakers and still look cool. So from my perspective on how one can wear a pair of sneakers and not look like a lil kid or a trend goes like this: ONLY wear Jordans if you are gonna do a sneaker and that jordan must be rare and preferably black, with the obvious freshness exception; no forces, air maxes, or dunks should ever be paired with jeans. Jeans should be straight legged or skinny. Pair it with a plain shirt or risk looking like your 17 year old trendy next door neighbor. And no matter what you paid for your sneaks, they are in fact sneakers, so this outfit can never be dressed up that much. So wear it to your local indie bar, out on occasion, but never make this fit an everyday thing.

So as I have aged my tastes in alcohol have too. Long gone are the days of Captain Morgan, Malibu, and Smirnoff Vodka. My preferences being a good whiskey on the rocks, a couple glasses of wine on occasion, and more recently, champagne, when you can think of any excuse for celebrating. I still like a glass of Moet, but I must say I am almost exclusively drinking Veuve Clicquot. Its a step up from Andre and cheap champagne, but not enough where you have to do the math on your month's bills if you make the purchase. Also try the Veuve Clicquot Rose. I have always appreciated an artist more when they do a video for a respective song and it is completely unexpected and off script (with regards to the songs lyrics). Robyn's Indestructible video is not so much completly off target (it does involve love?) but just def not what I expected. So i had to give it love. And hey its basically a 4 min sex scene with different couples. And also for the record, an artist can go wrong with this formula of going off script. Since probably my junior year in college I have always tried to maintain a simple classic american look. I feel as a man the look is timeless and masculine, can be dressed up or down, and coincides with the notion of the effortless cool. Obviously there are varying degrees to how to pull this look off, switching up shoes, or jewelry or other accessories, but the staples are always there. Selvedge denim, oxfords, henleys, polos, v necks, crewneck sweatshirts, pea coats, boat shoes, gingham, and madras all fit the bill. Details just recently posted on some basics that should be mainstays in your closet. The oxford in the traditional light blue, or a color like this never gets old and can be worn on many occasions, always untucked and slim enough that your shirt doesnt look like Al Bundys. The gray tee, which allows you to be comfortable and casual without the underwear look of a white tee. The henly is the perfect balance of casual comfort, but enough style to let ppl know you do care about how you look. The crewneck sweater is a staple that provides casual outwear thats not so heavy on the dressup; fit is essential. Look to J. Crew and Riviera Club and not Champion for good quality. The light weight v neck sweater is perfect for the summer when you wanna step it up from the tee shirt. The one pictured is prada if you wanna go big. And finally the quintessential polo cut to perfection with the right hem line. Also try a retro polo with knit waistband. I can attest to all of them and would suggest you Get Familiar.

So after a lil hiatus from the movie theater because absolutely nothing worthy has been out, I hit the movies in full force this past weekend and although I did enjoy Hanna, and my girl Saoirse Ronan beating people up to a european house soundtrack, the best movie I saw this weekend, and probably this year was Win/Win. The writer/director Thomas McCarthy, who you may know as the shady ass reporter from the Wire, Scott Templeton, wrote a flawless script which is driven by the characters. The plot seems simple, but each character has so much depth and complexity to them that I found myself fully invested in them and rooting for them to essentially get it together. Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Bobby Cannavale, Jeffery Tambor, Melanie Lynskey, and newcomer Alex Shaffer are all excellent. Without giving away too much, I will say that you all need to Get Familiar with probably the best movie you will see this year.

Spring Is In The Air

So I've gotten requests to post about summer style and although I'm tempted to because its currently 85 where I'm at, I can't. Come on people, it JUST officially became spring. But I will post about some spring style, which easily transitions to summer in most climates. Spring brings warmer weather which means less clothes and outwear, but because you have less clothes, the ones you are rockin must be on point. You can't hide a weak shirt behind a pea coat, trench, or leather jacket. You can still wear a suit jacket, but instead of the dress shirt or oxford, wear a simple tee shirt. Alternative Apparel, James Perse and J Crew all make great quality tees you can dress up or down. Embrace some colors, but keep it simplistic. Break out the chinos and polos, maybe a fedora. Wear your purcells, sperrys, and loafers with no socks, and please invest in some great tee shirts. And as the sun is out, a great pair of glasses always complete the look. A couple of my go to joints are the Ray Ban Wayfarer, Ray Ban Aviator, Persol Steve McQueen Folding Sunglasses, and maybe some Blu Blockers if u really wanna cover the eyes and can pull em off. And because you probably will be showing your waist, because if you haven't noticed it yet, wearing over sized baggy polos and tees is not a good look, invest in some good belts. I suggest a woven or leather joint to set u apart from the basic ones you will see your counterparts wearing. Here are some new and old looks which I think embody spring style.

As a kid I always used to wonder why my dad wore nice suits to work every ( to a job that DEF did not require this attire) and his response was it was always best to overdress. That's it. No explanation. For most of my youth I stuck to this and even thru the college sweatpants, forces, and white tee days, I still felt that presentation and looking almost out of place ( in a good way of course) was essential to have that confident swagger where people want to talk to you and want to know who you are. But as I was flipping thru this months GQ and the Style Guy, Glenn O' Brien had a GREAT piece on " friendship, schmoozing, and social advancement". I always thought post of Mr. O Brien's work for GQ was insightful and good, but his style was always so out there and crazy that I never respected him as much as I should have. Cuz at the end of the day, pulling off ones own signature style is all that matters correct? The piece is great and just expands on Glenn and the wealth of knowledge on life that is him. Literally, if you only really the page he writes for GQ monthly you are probably getting 10 percent of him. One of his quotes ( of many) that I enjoyed and reminded me of my dad was this :

Sweden's Finest

So I have been playing Peter, Bjorn, and John a lot lately and knew that they were huge in Europe but didn't realize they were Swedish. It got me to thinking of all the other young and relatively new to the American music scene artists from Sweden. And I'm sure I'm leaving some great artists out by not mentioning them, but Lykke Li, Peter Bjorn, and Robyn are three that stuck with me. Robyn has a great blend of pop perfection, over some dance electronic type beats with a lil hip hop in the mix. It make for some dancy, feel good tracks, but she actually sings ( not auto-tune) and the production is flawless. Peter Bjorn and John are a trio who have that indie style that combines so many different styles, creating a sound that is all their own. And come on, Mick Boogie remixed their album Living Thing. U know your hot. Some may know Lykke and even PB& J from their collaborations with Drake on So Far Gone, but she is a star in her own right. Her unique voice and combination of electronic beats make for a good listen. On my first trip to Europe, I didn't wanna go to Sweden and thought nothing of it, but after getting familiar with some of the homegrown talent, I may have to venture there on my next trip.

New Music Tuesday and we got some good ones to discuss. I did not post last week about Lupe Fiasco's new album Lasers and can't really give a proper review because I haven't listened to it all the way thru, but on first impressions, and these are just first impressions people, it does not hold up to his two previous albums. But more on that soon.

This post is dedicated to new music people.. and good music it is! Travis Barkers solo debut, Give The Drummer Some is one of the best albums I have heard by someone who actually does not give vocals to tracks. More than an album by a DJ or Producer like Khalid, Mark Ronson, or Timbaland, Travis has an imprint on every song without lending vocals. The most impressive thing is the collaborations. A who's who in the music industry spanning different styles of music and genre, Travis hits it all. Cudi, Snoop, Clipse, Steve Aoki, RZA, The Game, Bun B and Slash just to name a few. The shit knocks to say the least. Props to Travis, for making good music and really putting in work. I always knew he was a talented and respected cat, but as drummer without vocals on an album, to put together something like this really speaks volumes. Get Familiar.

And I gotta plug Chris Brown for his new album F.A.M.E. Graffiti was not as bad as its record sales would indicate, but me and you both know why that was. Saying that, it was a fall off from his first two albums. But he redeemed his self with the Tyga collabo and comes correct on this one. I can say that this album is a solid return to the Pop/RnB formula that made him a star. Some hits that have been out for some time are there (Deuces, Look at Me Now) but there are some good tracks that you soon will be singing to yourself. But damn CB, I know you trying to sell records, but Bieber?

Varsity Blues

So I have been a fan of the Varsity Letterman's baseball style jacket for a while now and I have seen it done a number of different ways that all are done so well I couldn't decide which one I liked the best till I saw this one (second from left). I saw a couple vintage ones with some writing, but to me this is how it should be done. Subtle, simple, classy, All American. The leather sleeves make it nice enough that you can wear it out without having flashbacks of high school pep rallies, but not to dressy that you cant wear it to your local bar. I saw a RRL one similar to this that was done very well at a price that would allow you to not stress about how you are going to pay rent. Prior to 2010 I did not live in a city where jackets and outwear were a necessity. I literally have been to the beach on Christmas, so forgive me if I didn't appreciate outwear in terms of style and necessity. But now, as those 33 degree weekends hit me like a slap across the face, I understand the need! And not to mention a good piece of outwear can dress up just about anything.

I cant lie and say that I was on Arcade Fire when they first dropped but I liked The Suburbs so I went out and got their other albums, Neon Bible and Funeral. You definetly have to be in a certain mood to listen to their music, but that is what type of kick I have been on lately. I also have recently gotten familiar with Mumford & Sons and their debut album Sigh No More. I liked their first single, The Cave, and have been equally impressed with the album. My last reccomendation that has been steadily playing on the pod is Florence and The Machine. Florence Welch has the raspy soulful voice that makes you feel her lyrics. A little different than my girl Adele, but she is a presence. These indie English musicians are all so talented and make real music which makes me appreciate it all the more. Live instruments, lyrics they wrote, and power house voices make it hard for me not to keep them in steady rotation on the ipod. During a time when auto tune and over produced music with little to no quality becomes hits, its good to see artists like Adele, Florence, Mumford & Sons, and Arcade Fire get love. So if you want some good music, please Get Familiar.

So a while back I posted about my love for Eunice Lee and her brand Unis. For me if a woman has her presentation on point, then she has won half the battle, maybe more. By presentation I mean style, confidence, ability to draw people in without being needy for it, her look, to put it simply, her swagger. Eunice has all of this, and thats what makes her attractive. Well in her list of 10 essentials was this piece, a vintage military jacket. For me I actually got my military jacket from America Rag Cie a couple years back and it has become that much more timeless over the years in. Its a piece that is light enough to wear when its not that cold over something like a white v neck and with a pair of jeans, or layer it underneath a pea coat if it is really cold. A piece that can serve as a mainstay in your closet. Get familiar.

The Perfect Fit

So I posted yesterday in regards to the fit of jeans and how certain body types should coincide with certain fits. Like I have said before, my idea of the perfect cut for a jean is a straight legged cut, low rise, that is slimmer thru the opening of the leg. It just so happened my boy Tommy Ton captured a person strolling along during New York fashion week that shared my same sentiments. And although I do appreciate a worn in look of some of my kicks, there is nothing like a pair of crispy all whites. The combination of a perfect fitting selvedge denim jean with some crispy all whites is unbeatable.

For the last five years or so jeans have got smaller and smaller. And while myself have always thought that a straight legged jean was the best way to go, I can appreciate the look of a skinny jean. But, and this is a big disclaimer; if you do not have the body type to be wearing a skinny jean, do not wear them, man or woman. There is nothing worst than the look of everything jammed in together in a skinny jean. So please know your body type and what you can and cannot wear. Temper Trap

So unless if you just have been sitting in a cave for the past year and a half to two years you probably have heard the song Sweet Disposition by the Temper Trap. I first heard it while watching 500 Days of Summer and then buying the soundtrack, which i must say is the best soundtrack to an album that I have ever heard. Best? you might ask. Yes best because although soundtracks like Dirty Dancing and The Bodyguard may have had more hits and Indie soundtracks like Garden State and The Last Kiss can hold their own, 500 Days of Summer is the perfect combination of catchy more popular tracks, indie hits, and The Smiths. But i digress. The Temper Trap's debut album, Conditions is very worthy of a listen. I used to always hate when old heads would say stuff like " hip hop just isn't the same anymore" but as I age I can see myself starting to share there sentiments. I still cop most noteworthy rap and hip hop albums because I'm a fan of music, but it doesn't see a playlist on the reg. anymore. Sad, but if my favorite rapper doesn't even listen to rap much anymore and is listening to the likes of MGMT and Kings of Leon, isn't that saying something?

I recently saw this kid who was about 12 yrs old and was really dressed to impress. It was at Borders and he was with his dad so I figure he most likely just came from school, but had on a fit that was so put together I was surprised. Levis 511 khakis, gingham button up, Yankee fitter, and the black and red 4s. Well I told a friend of the kid living in sartorial splendor, and was describing the fit and saw that the kid was Asian. Not that it should have, but it took away from some of the respect I was giving. Lets face it, Asians can naturally dress so the surprise of the the young kid coming correct isn't as surprising. I'm not going to generalize and say that all Asian ( Japanese and Chinese specifically) people can dress, but if you are of Asian decent and are into fashion somewhat, there is a good chance you are gonna have great style. Now I'm not saying they are not without flaws; too much accessorizing, trying to incorporate too much, and ill fitting clothes, but they typically have a unique style that is sartorial. To me the best aspect of Japanese and Chinese style is the blend of high fashion and hip hop effortlessly. BAPE and other brands were at the forefront of this, but the cats that do it the best put their own stamp on the their fit. Some examples of our friends from Asia showing out.

I think that alot of people think about fashion and the idea of putting forth thought and time to what to what you are gonna wear daily as too much effort and some of the stuff they see in a magazine or on TV may be something that they would never wear but that train of thought is somewhat misguided. Style comes from ones own personal belief of what they think works or what they think is cool. Granted fashion is about much more than that but ones personal style can always come forth in whatever they wear. Tommy Ton is great at capturing people on the street who have a combination of fashion and personal style. People that have a certain look but added something to it, or wore it different than expected, but with confidence, it looks that much better. These guys all get it. Knowing is half the battle and by just having a clean asthetic you dont always have to be over the top. Fit and cut of clothes can make that much difference. I am a firm believer in the simpler things. Subtle excellence.

So today was a rainy day and was in the mood for a little soul music and my request was satisfied by a couple of artists who are beasts in the game. I copped Adele's new album 21, and was very impressed to say the least. Great songwriting and a powerhouse voice that she uses to make the listener feel every lyric she belts make her one of a kind. She def took her time with this album and avoided the sophmore album jinx. Highly reccomend the album as well as her debut, and the remixed version of 19, 1988. The other artist who I got familiar with today was Philadelphia's own Musiq Soulchild. I have been a fan for years and had copped some albums but today I completed the purchase of his discography. The combination of up beat smooth tracks, with baby making music, and love of my life wedding tracks, make him a unique force who always comes correct. You have to be in a certain mood for R&B/Soul, because the quality of the work WILL be better than something you hear on the radio, and to truely appreciate it, you must be tuned in. Dwele, Maxwell, D'Angelo, Musiq, Floetry, Goapele, Adele are all great and should be recognized. Preferably on a record player.

So I recently was watching Jumper and believe me the only redeeming thing about the movie (besides the fact that the main character could warp in and out of buildings) was Rachel Bilson. Along with Natalie Portman she may be the cutest chick in Hollywood. Not saying that there aren't better looking women out there, there are, but none have the cuteness factor she has. The idea that she could easily be your girlfriend tommorow if you played your cards right, make her iressitable.

So I had heard good things about Blue Valentine and it finally came to my area so I thought Id check it out and def came away impressed. Anyone who has seen Half Nelson can attest to Ryan Goslings ability as an actor and lets just say Michelle Williams has come a long way since Dawsons Creek. The two both give great performances and drive the story of a couple who fall in and eventually out of love. The concept reminded me of 500 Days of Summer, in that it was a love story, but not boring traditional one that we see so often. This may have been the realest account of a story of boy meets a girl and the trials and tribulations that happen in a relationship. Would definatley tell anyone who wants to see a great movie to get familiar, but to be aware of what you are getting into.

Double Dip

There have been alot of movies I have been meaning to see and recently I had the chance to double dip and see two movies for the price of one.. I chose True Grit and The Fighter. Beforehand I had been told that True Grit was a great movie and worthy and basically got a glowing review from anyone who I spoke with about it and after watching it I thought it was a good but not great movie. I saw a comparison as the best Western since Unforgiven. Lets hope this was not a comparison, because it is nowhere near the movie Unforgiven is. On a more positive note, the actress who played the protagonist of the story, Hailee Steinfield shines brighter than her big name costars and may be one to look for in the future.
My second choice was The Fighter which did not disapoint. Although the story is not a complex or difficult one, partly because its true, and partly because its already been told before, the movie is very good and the cast shines. Specifically Amy Adams and Christian Bale. And i will go on the record for saying Bales performance is one of the best I have seen in years, and reason to see it solely. Get familiar.

R.I.P Teena Marie

Sadly, my girl Teena Marie died last week and I had to do something to pay my respects. Anyone can attest to the fact that the first time they saw Teena Marie in person their mouths dropped and immediatley said (out loud or to themselves) shes white?!?! The voice was that soulful. So I thought id give love to one of my favorite old school slow jamz of all time, Fire and Desire. Rick had pipes back in the day too, no pun intended. And you are not seeing a long version, it is really 7 plus minutes. Gotta love the old school ad libs.

So anyone who follows music and more specifically R&B has known that it has been very average for a while. OK I must admit I bumped Invented Sex and Say Aah but damn, what is the state of R&B when Trey Songz is on top of the game. Usher put out some good music, but nothing close to his other classic albums. Drake's singing, autotune/rapping is probably the best, or at the least most creative R&B to be put out recently. So I have been hoping for something along the lines of a Robin Thicke: The Evolution of Robin Thicke level of music to be released and today I don't have to wait anymore. Releases by Michael Jackson, R.Kelly, Jamie Foxx, Eric Benet, Keri Hilson, and Keyshia Cole have my hopes up. And so far they have not disappointed. And for the record, neo-soul R&B is not the R&B I am referring to. That soul music is so much deeper and soulful that it needs its own category. With that being said Blacksummersnight was top 5 albums of 2010. Easily. So get familiar. And big Ups to Kels for losing the mask and stepping the style game up channeling a little Marvin, Ray, and Sam to create a great album cover.

So I recently starting reading the new Steve Martin novel, An Object of Beauty. For those not familiar with Steve Martin as an author he is MUCH different than he is as an actor. Much deeper and definitely not as corny. I read his other book, Shopgirl and although it ended on a note that I wasn't expecting, it was still well written and much different than I expected. Like Shopgirl, the protagonist of his new novel is a young woman with deeper underlying issues that come to the forefront as the novel progresses. An Object of Beauty to me is at its best when it focuses on the art world of New York which is the field that the lead character makes her living through and is deeply entrenched in. The description of the inner workings of the New York art world, and the detailing of incredible works of art interwoven with a story works for me. It may not be for everyone and I have heard mixed reviews but id still tell you to Get Familiar.

Someone who (in my opinion) is one of the leaders in promoting the effortless cool lifestyle is the jewelry designer Phillip Crangi. He pulls everything off so well with so little effort he has to be a style icon. And not to mention his line Giles and Brothers is one of the freshest out there for a man trying to get a piece of jewelry and still feel like a man. GQ always does a piece on 10 essentials of random stylish people. The responses vary from computers and tech stuff to all clothing, to food. It just varies on the person. Eunice Lee was one of my favorites as well as Kanyeezy. But Crangi is up there with his distinct style and approach to his essentials. Stan Smiths, Hermes watch, Cashmere Scarf, Barbour jacket; it doesnt get better. To that sentiment only Phillip Crangi would have his tatoos as one of his essentials. Gotta love the originality of the tattoo across his chest. "Je ne regrette rien." which translated means I Regret Nothing. Thought id share a lil bit.
